What is White Collar Crime?
Committed by middle class individuals who abuse their work positions for personal gain at the expense of everyone else.
What is Corporate crime?
Offences committed by large companies or individuals on behalf of the company, that benefits the rest of the company.
What is Criminogenic capitalism crime?
Capitalism by its very nature causes crime.
What is the labelling theory?
The idea that if the rich control the laws, they will adapt the law to make their actions seem legal and working class actions as illegal.
What is Differential Association?
The less we associate with people holding attitudes favourable to the law. The more we associate with people with criminal attitudes the more likely we are to become deviant ourselves.
What does Cohen say?
Sees working class youths as culturally deprived, they have not been socialised into the mainstream middle class culture.
Less achievement in education.
Leads to status frustration - and these subcultures lead the working class to commit crime.
What does Miller say?
Argues the lower class has developed an independent subcultures with separate norms and values that clash with those of the mainstream culture, explains why lower class have a higher crime rate.
What does Sutherland say?
Sees crime as a behaviour learned from others in a social context
