What is situational crime Prevention?
A pre-emptive approach that relies, not on improving society or its institution but simply reducing opportunity for crime.
An example is ‘target-hardening’ - involves the effort a burglar needs to put in and increased CCTV and security guards.
What is environmental crime Prevention?
Regionally and wider problem area focused.
Examples of it are zero-tolerance policing in a city with increasing crime rates.
What is community and social strategies?
Working with offenders or ex-offenders in the local community in order to prevent re-offending.

CCTV does not deter many criminals as they do not see it as a threat.

What is the criticism of situational crime Prevention?
- Tends to focus only on small petty crime and ignores crimes which are more costly and more harmful
- Assumes criminals make rational decisions, unlikely in crimes where the criminals are under the influence of drugs and alcohol
- Ignores the root of crime
What are the criticisms of environmental crime prevention?
Zero tolerance in New York reducing crime rates my not be true as In New York living standards rose, unemployment shrank and there was less of a use of drugs
What are the criticisms of social and community crime prevention?
Like situational crime prevention, it focuses on smaller, more petty crimes committed by criminals
