Left Realists Flashcards
(8 cards)
What do left Realists ultimately feel?
That people are pushed into crime through unfair or unequal circumstances.
What does Young say?
A Bulimic Society
- The idea that the least well off in society gorge themselves on a diet of consumerism but because of their limited means (money) they have to constantly vomit up these expectations.
What are Lea and Young’s 4 elements to focus on in order to tackle crime?
- social and structural factors which lead to offences
- the public and the way they react to crime. do people trust the police enough to report the crime? is the social reaction strong enough to discourage crime?
- the role of victims - will they come forward
- the offenders - why did they commit the offence? how could we intervene?
What is relative deprivation?
Refers to how someone feels in relation to others, or compared to their own expectation.
Explains the apparent paradox of increasing crime in the context of an increasingly wealthy society.
What does Lea and Young say?
Argue that crime has its roots in deprivation but deprivation itself is not directly responsible for crime - living standards have risen since 1950s but crime rate is much higher today than 1950s.
What is a left Realists on subcultures?
See subcultures as a groups collective response to the situation of relative deprivation.
What is marginalisation?
Where people lack the power or resources to fully participate in society.
According to left realists - marginalised groups lack both clear goals and organisations to represent their interests.
What is multiple aetiology?
left realists argue that crime is caused by several different factor.
They call this multiple aetiology.
