What is state crime?
Illegal or deviant activities perpetrated by the state
e.g. genocide, war crimes, torture, discrimination.
What does McLaughlin say?
There are 4 styles of state crime:
1. crimes by the police
2. economic crime
3. social and cultural crime, e.g. institutional racism
4. practical crimes, e.g. corruption
What does Chambliss say?
State crime is result of strain, meaning the state is town between different sets of objectives
e.g. commit crime where they feel like the country is at threat - CIA kidnapping people to protect the country from communism.
What does Cohen say?
Concern with human rights and state crime has been a major development in recent years due to increased focus on victims of crime and organisations.
