CORE PRACTICAL 10 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is core practical 10? (1)
What is core practical 10? (1)
Investigating the effect of different wavelengths of light on the rate of photosynthesis
What is the first stage of this practical? (1)
Check you have a suitable piece of pondweed, measure out this pondweed that will fit into the boiling tube.
What is the second stage of this practical? (1)
Cut off 1cm from the end of the stem to Ensure there is free passage of gas given off
What is the third stage of this practical? (1)
Cover this with a dilute solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate to provide an excess supply of carbon dioxide (hydrogen carbonate) in water
What is the fourth stage of this practical? (1)
Place a bench lamp 15cm from the boiling tube and observe stem end for a few minutes. Place a beaker of water between the lamp and shield to absorb heat so that the temperature of the boiling tube remains constant.
What is the fifth stage of this practical? (1)
Set up the apparatus making sure the capillary tube is full of water using a syringe. Move pondweed until the stream of bubbles is under the capillary tube and no bubbles are escaping. Check the lamp is 15cm away from tube.
What is the sixth stage of this practical? (1)
Start stop clock and collect the gas given off for 5 minutes.
What is the seventh stage of this practical? (1)
At the end of the time period, using the syringe to draw up the bubble in the capillary tube, repeat this 3 times with the lamp having no filter.
What is the eighth stage of this practical? (1)
Cover the tube with the first coloured filter without moving the lamp. Leave the apparatus for 5 minutes to settle down the rate with the new filter.
What is the ninth stage of this practical? (1)
Remove any gas bubble formed during this time by drawing it to the far side of the scale using the syringe, then take three more measurements
What is the tenth stage of this practical? (1)
Repeat the whole process with different coloured filters using the same piece of pondweed
