How is danger assessed?
Ask examiner “is it safe to proceed”
How is responsiveness assessed?
Ask patient “hello, can you hear me, hello”
At this point also call for help
How is the airway checked?
Open mouth WITHOUT head tilting and check inside
How is breathing and circulation checked?
Chin lift, then do a headtilt and jaw thrust with one arm
Place ear to mouth, finger on carotid and observe chest rising - count to 10
What should be done once is has been determined patient is not breathing and is pulse-less?
Ask help to phone for an ambulance and ask where the nearest AED/Defibrillator is
If no help make sure you phone yourself
Describe CPR
Heel of one hand on centre of chest
Interlock other hand and have fingers floating
Press 5-6cm deep for 30 beat cycles at a rate of 100-120 bpm
What is done after 30 beats?
Move to the head of patient, place mask over mouth and nose, get a tight seal, headtilt/chin lift and breath twice into mask
What does an AED stand for?
Automated external defibrillators
What should be done if patient is unconscious but still breathing?
Recovery position
Explain how to place someone in the recovery position?
Hand closest to you above head
Hand away from you to the cheek nearest you
Far leg up like a triangle and pull towards you to roll body over
Tilt head back and lift chin up
Check normal breathing again
Adjust the leg you used to roll to ensure stability
