Cystoisospora of carnivores - Life cycle
1) Exogenous sporogony: unsporulated oocyst is shed in feces of FH and sporulates in environment. Sporulated oocyst is ingested by final host.
2) Endogenous merogony: excyst in the intestines and releases sporozoites. Each sporozoite invades an epithelial cell.
Merogony: binary fission inside cell –> schizont/meront with merozoites. Cell ruptures and releases merozoites, which infects new cells.
3) Endogenous gametogony: inside intestinal cells, merozoites become microgamete (male) and macrogamete (female). Nuclei fuses –> zygote –> oocyst. Unsporulated oocyst is shed in feces.
4) Paratenic host (rarely): invades extraintestinal tissue and produce a single dormant cyst without causing disease. Hypnozoites inside.
PP: C. canis: 9 days, C. felis: 10-11 days, C. rivolta/cati: >14 days
