Location of eimeria species in rabbit and hare
- Small & large intestine
- Eimeria stiedae - liver and bilde ducts
clinical signs of eimeria in lagomorphs
- Inappetence, Depression, Diarrhea, Dehydration, Weight loss, Fever, Anemia, Pale MM, Bad coat, pain
- Convulsions and paralysis in severe intestinal coccidiosis
- Death by dehydration and secondary bacterial infections
- Hepatic coccidosis: weakness, damage of liver & bile duct, coma
Pathogenesis of eimeria in lagomorphs
- Highly contagious - causes enteritis, hepatitis, high mortality in youngs.
- Intestinal form leads to villous atrophy, and mucosal necrosis –> diarrhoea and poor absorption.
- Hepatic form (E. stiedae) invade bile duct –> hyperplasia, inflammation and bile duct obstruction. Leads to hepatomegaly, jaundice and ascites.
diagnosis of eimeria in lagomorphs
flotation
treatment of eimeria in lagomorphs
diclazuril, toltrazuril, monesin, rodenidine
Life cycle of Eimeria in lagomorphs
1) Exogenous sporogony - unsporulated oocysts are shed in feces of host, sporulation of oocysts happens in external environment
2) Endogenous merogony (asexual) - excystation of sporulated oocysts and 2-3 generations of merozoites
3) Endogenous gamotony (sexual) - production of microgametes and macrogametes that forms a zygote and is passed on with feces as unsporulated oocyst
