Q

Pathogenesis of eimeria in lagomorphs

A
  • Highly contagious - causes enteritis, hepatitis, high mortality in youngs.
  • Intestinal form leads to villous atrophy, and mucosal necrosis –> diarrhoea and poor absorption.
  • Hepatic form (E. stiedae) invade bile duct –> hyperplasia, inflammation and bile duct obstruction. Leads to hepatomegaly, jaundice and ascites.

Q

Life cycle of Eimeria in lagomorphs

A

1) Exogenous sporogony - unsporulated oocysts are shed in feces of host, sporulation of oocysts happens in external environment
2) Endogenous merogony (asexual) - excystation of sporulated oocysts and 2-3 generations of merozoites
3) Endogenous gamotony (sexual) - production of microgametes and macrogametes that forms a zygote and is passed on with feces as unsporulated oocyst
