What is hypoglycemia?
Low blood sugar (<70 mg/dL), causing altered mental status, sweating, seizures, and pale, clammy skin.
What is hyperglycemia?
High blood sugar (>200 mg/dL) with thirst, frequent urination, fruity breath, and Kussmaul respirations.
What is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)?
A complication of Type 1 diabetes with insulin deficiency, ketone buildup, and metabolic acidosis.
What should EMTs do for diabetic emergencies?
Check blood glucose, give oral glucose if patient is alert, support airway if unconscious, and transport rapidly.
What is the dosage of oral glucose for hypoglycemia?
One tube (15–25 grams) of glucose gel orally if patient is alert and able to swallow.
