What is hypertension?
Chronically elevated arterial blood pressure that increases risk of stroke, MI, and kidney failure.
What causes hypertension?
Poor diet (excess salt), obesity, stress, genetics, and secondary causes like kidney disease or hormonal disorders.
What are symptoms of hypertension?
Often asymptomatic; headache, nosebleeds, blurred vision; in hypertensive crisis chest pain and neurological changes.
What is a hypertensive emergency?
Blood pressure over 180/120 with signs of organ damage such as chest pain or neurological deficits.
What are EMT considerations for hypertension?
Monitor vital signs closely, watch for stroke or MI signs, keep patient calm, and transport promptly if BP is critically high.
