Disunity in Scotland
Disunity created in Scotland due to having 1 central gov, many people wanted independece
However, majority in Scotland voted to stay in the UK, creating more disunity
Disunity in Catalonia
Catalan region wants independence from Spain
92% voted for it, but Spanish gov refused to recognise it legitimately
People believe Catalonia responsible for a great deal of Spain’s GDP, yet it doesn’t see the benefits and investment
Globalisation in South Africa
Allows manufacturers to have access to global market, so more export profit, however this has created ethnic inequality
Vast reserves of precious material e.g. gold and diamonds have generated income + tourism
However, opening South Africa to global market means they have had to take on SAPs
And there is high inequality, black people make less income than white people
Globalisation in Brazil
Globalisation has allowed it to host global events e.g. Olympics
However, much economic profit from globalisation has not gone to locals, but is invested in multi-million dollar homes for the rich
This creates disunity between social classes
Characteristics of a failed state
The political and economic system is so unstable the gov can no longer maintain control
Why is Somalia a failed state?
Civil war created by rebel groups competing for power against oppressive government
Ongoing war due to various gangs fighting for power
Why is Syria a failed state?
Cause:
Syrian uprising against corrupt gov
Ethnic divide of Arabs, Kurds, Christians
Rebel groups:
ISIS, Jihadist Groups, Islamic front
Support:
Has militant support from Russia, Iran
Why is it a failed state:
Controlled by various groups occupying different areas so gov can’t meet needs of population
Has the gov tried to maintain national identity during war?
-No, Syrian women who were interviewed say they don’t know about Syria outside of their village, so the only identity they have is within their local community
