Endocrine System Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is the Endocrine systems purpose?
Communicatory system
Helps to regulate activity of cells and organs
Works alongside NS to control vital functions
Uses chemical signals to send messages
List all glands and their specified roles within the body?
Hypothalamus: controls release of 8 major hormones by the pituitary gland
Pituitary: regulates the functions of other endocrine glands
Thyroid: plays a major role in metabolism, growth and maturation, produces thyroxine
Adrenals: responsible for release of adrenaline causing ‘fight or flight’ response releases adrenaline from the medulla
Pancreas: produces insulin and glucose to maintain Blood glucose levels
Ovaries: produces oestrogen and progesterone
Testes: produces testosterone and sperm
what are symptons of adrenaline
heart rate increases
breathing rate increases
digestion slows down
pupils dilate
sweating activated
BGC levels increase
What is the sequence of a ‘fight or flight’ response?
Amygdala senses danger, sends signal to hypothalamus
Hypothalamus activates Pituitary gland
Activates Sympathetic NS
Sends signal to Adrenal gland
Adrenal gland releases adrenaline
Activates Fight or Flight response
Parasympathetic is activated
