What is the Id(…)?

A

Id (0-18mths): Unconscious, the baby desire stuff, pleasure principle.

A

Ego (18mths-3yrs): Conscious, Reality principle, the child realises what they can/cant do but still try to achieve it

A

Superego (3-5yrs): unconscious, morality principle, feelings of guilt when performing wrong actions

What is the first stage(…)?

A

Oral stage (0-18 mths) - babies at this age desire to eat/chew/bite/suck (mouth involved activities)

What is the second stage(…)?

A

Anal stage (18mths - 2 yrs) - children are now undergoing potty training at this age which they desire to hold/release their feaces which gives them pleasure

What is the third stage(…)?

A

Phallic stage (3yrs-6yrs) - boys at this age are now aware of having a penis; which they have pleasure playing/fiddling with.
Oedipus complex: a boy will have unconsious sexual desires for their mother. Is in competition, but also fears his father of castration
Electra complex: a girl will believe that she was castrated at birth and will have penis envy and instead has unconsious sexual desires for opposite sex parents

What is the fourth stage(…)?

A

Latency stage (6yrs - puberty): the boy’s sexual desires will be dormant as the id will not desire anything sexually in this period

What is the fifth stage(…)?

A

Genital stage (12yrs - maturity): The id will now reactivate and makes powerful demands for heterosexual sexual desires

What are the types of defence mechanisms?

A

Repression - to push a thought into the unconscious section of your mind
Denial - to not acknowledge the truth of the event and claiming that it is false
Displacement - to turn your anger to a neutral object and release it on that object

What are the advantages of the Psychodynamic approach?

A

Included many case studies in his research which was full of rich information (e.g. Little Hans)
Developed free association (talk-therapy) which is a way of relieving stress and reducing symptoms

A

Case studies were not replicable and made the results of it unreliable
Methods used were not scientific meaning it is less reliable.
