Endocrine system Flashcards
(35 cards)
How is the endocrine and nervous system similar/related?
THey bot mentain homeostasis and are connected by the hypothalamus.
What does the hypothalamus directly control
Autnomic nervous system and PITUITARY GLAND
what is the hypothalamus and pituitary gland connected?
Nerves and blood vessels
What are the three glands that the pituitary gland affects directly?
Thyroid, Adrenal and Gonad glands
What is a homrone
Chemical released into bloodstream to carry info to other cells in body
What do homrones attach themselves to
Target cells
what are the binding sites on target cells called?
receptors
what do adrenal hormones help with?
Prepares body for stressful and difficult situations
What does the outer portion of adrenal glands secrete
Steroid hormone like….glucocorticoids and aldosterone
what do steroid hormones do?
Increase available glucose and help combat body during traumatic or stressful situations
What does the inner portion of your adrenal glands secrete?
Two amino acid hormones….epinephrine and norepinephrine
What does epinephrine and norepinephrine do?
Stimulate nervous system + muscle contractions
what is the inner portion of adrenal gland called?
Adrenal medulla
what is the outer portion of the adrenal gland called?
Adrenal cortex
Adrenal medulla receives nerve impulses from what?
Hypothalamus
What is the adrenal cortex controlled by?
Anterior pituitary gland
What does your adrenal cortex secrete?
Glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids
What do glucocorticoids do?
Metabolism of carbs, proteins and lipids into glucose, increasing glucose in blood!
Where does cortisol come from?
adrenal cortex
What does cortisol do
Breaks down muscle proteins into amino acids
And the liver converts the amino acids into glucose increasing blood glucose!
What is the benefits of cortisol
Good when under stress and is antiflammatory meaning it surpresses your immune system
What does aldosterone target?
Kidney
What does aldosterone do?
Increase absorption of sodium and excretes potassium.
Increases blodo volume and pressure
What is aldosterone controlled by?
Renin, produced by kidney
