evidence of evolution Flashcards
(11 cards)
what are the evidence for evulution that need to be present
- all life has a common ancestor
- species are mutable and change over time
- the position of species in time and space is constant with their relationships to one another
what is the hierarchal organisation of life.
we can create a tree (phylogeny) that we classify everything where everything is linked from a common ancestor.
what is homology
a characteristic that is shared by two or more organisms that have come fro the same ancestor.
explain what convergent evolution is
the idea that structures are modified to solve environmental challenges/ selective forces.
explain embryology
development reflects phylogeny
explain vestigial organs
loss of their original functions
explain the concept of imperfect bodies
a design in the body that is basically ‘unintelligent’. eg. eye having a part that makes ti hard for us to see.
explain biogeogprahy
seeing animals in similar areas before the earth divided.
explain intermediate forms
if smth evolved from smth else, we must see organisms that have the same characteristics of the two.
explain evolution in our lifetimes
organisms with fast generation times are observed to have evolved on short timescales in response to strong selection pressure
artificial selection
choosing desired traits to modify them.
