Main Idea
Personality is formed in the first few years of life and parents play an important role with a lasting impact on the child’s emotional state
Parts of self: the Id
biological urges driving behavior
ie. sleep, sex, food
operates on the pleasure principle
Parts of the Self: the Superego
Guided by guilt, values, morals, and conscience
Parts of the Self: the Ego
Operates on the logic/reality principle
Mediates the Id’s biological urges and the Superego’s guilt
Is developed through going through the psychosexual stages
Psychosexual stages: Oral Stage
Birth-2Yrs
The infant is solely driven by the Id and the Id is focused on the mouth for stimulation and comfort (sucking reflex)
Psychosexual stages: Anal Stage
Focused on maintaining control over bodily processes/urges (potty training and bowel movements)
Psychosexual stages: Phallic Stage
Early childhood
Development of superego and a sense of cultural masculinity or femininity
Psychosexual stages: Latency
Developing friendships becomes focus
Ego and superego are refined through cooperation and negotiation with others
Psychosexual stages: Genital Stage
Puberty; preoccupied with sex and reproduction
