What are the main structures of the excretory system?
Kidney
Ureters
Bladder
Urethra
Where are the kidneys located?
Either side of the spine below the rib cage
Where does ultrafiltration occur?
In the Nephron
What is filtrate?
The plasma that comes from the glomerulus
What is the kidneys function?
Collects water
Filters bodily fluids
Maintains balance of electrolytes, and water and plasma
Removes and concentrates the waste products
Eliminates waste products (via sweating, urine and faeces
What order do the main structures follow?
Kidneys-> ureters -> bladder -> urethra
What is a nephron?
Part of the kidney where the general filtering of waste occurs
What are the ureters?
Paired muscular tubes which carry urine to the bladder
What is the bladder?
A hollow muscular organ that expands with urine from the kidneys
What are the layers of the kidney?
1.Mucosa
2.Submucosa
3.Muscularis
4.Outer layer
What is the urethra?
A tube that moves urine from the urinary bladder (and sperm) out of the body
