The Brain Flashcards
(38 cards)
What does the brain control?
Thought
Memory
Emotion
Touch
Motor skills
Vision
Breathing
Temperature
Hunger
(Every process that regulates the body)
Function of the brain
To control the body
Receive information and interprets this information so it can understand and associate meaning
What are the 3 areas of the brain?
Forebrain
Mid brain
Hindbrain
What is the cerebral cortex?
The outer layer of the brain, has folds to increase the area for the neurons
What are neurons?
Informational messengers
What are the 6 structures inside the forebrain?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Basal ganglia
Olfactory bulb
Amygdala
Hippocampus
What are the structures of the forebrain involved in?
The limbic system
What is the limbic system?
The part of the brain involved in behavioural and emotional responses
What is the thalamus and what is it’s function?
The sorting centre for neural processing
tells your body what to do
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
In control of homeostasis
What is the basal ganglia and what is it’s function?
A group of subcritical nuclei in control of motor controls, speech etc
What is the function of the olfactory bulb.
Sense of smell
What is the function of the amygdala?
Processes emotions
Detects danger
Controls motivation
Modulates vigilance
Generates negative emotions
What is the function of the hippocampus?
Helps with learning and memory, located in the temporal lobe
What is the function of the midbrain ?
(The reticular formation)
Arousal and consciousness
Coordinates movement
Controls the cardiovascular and respiratory centres
Pain sensitisation
Involved in motivation
What are neuron receptors?
Membrane proteins in the brain that allow neurons to communicate with each other using chemical signals
List some examples of neuron receptors
Dopamine
Glutamate
5-HT-3
GABA
What is dopamine?
Detects or moves dopamine (the brains natural reward system)
What is glutamate?
Memory and learning, stores information
What is 5-HT-3?
Information communication in the digestive tract
What is GABA?
Controls information movement in the brain, nerve cell communication
What structures are located in the hindbrain?
Cerebellum
The pons
Medulla oblongata
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Controls balance, posture, voluntary muscle movement
What is the function of the pons?
Relays information between the brain and spinal cord, important for key survival function:
Breathing
Sleep wake cycle
Sensory information
Motor information
Communication
Taste
Touch
Pain perception
Temp perception
