What is the Vulva?

What is the vagina?

Childbirth

For lubrication and protection
What is the cervix?
The opening from the vagina to the uterus
What are the functions of the cervix?
Acts as a barrier
Opens during menstruation and childbirth
Remains closed during pregnancy to protect the foetus
What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
Perimetrium (outer)
Myometeium (middle)
Endometrium (inner)
What is the perimetrium?
Thin serousal layer, lines the uterus
What is the myometrium?
Thick, smooth, contracts during labour
What is the endometrium
Lining of the uterus that thickens during menstruation

What is the Fundus?
The upper part of the uterus
What is the corpus?
The main body of the uterus
What is the uterine cavity?
Space within the uterus where the fertilised egg implants
What is the isthmus?
Narrow organ/passage/ piece of tissue connecting two larger parts
Acts as a gatekeeper between the uterine cavity and cervix
What are the oviducts?
The fallopian tubes
What are the oviducts essential for?
Egg transport
Fertilisation site
Zygote transport
What are the ovaries?
Structures at the end of each oviduct, holding ovum
What are the ovaries function?
Oocyte production
Hormone production
Ovulation
Corpus luteum function
Fertility
What is the corpus luteum function?
The preparation of the uterine lining for egg implantation
What is the infundibulum?
Funnel shaped structure at the distal end of the oviducts
What are the infundibulum responsible for?
Capturing the released ovum during ovulation with finger-like projections called fimbriae
