Nerves Flashcards
(14 cards)
List the 7 structures of a nerve cell
Dendrites
Cell body
Nucleus
Myelin sheath
Schwann cell
Axon terminals
Axon
What are dendrites?
The part of the nerve cell that connects to another nerve cells axon terminals to receive information
What is the cell body of a nerve cell?
The top part of the nerve that holds the dendrites and nucleus and connects to the axon
What is the nucleus of the nerve cell?
The cells control centre, controlling the electrical impulses sent though the cell
What is the axon?
The main body of the nerve leading from the cell body to the axon terminals
What is a Schwann cell?
Cells keeping the nerve cell alive
What are the myelin sheaths?
Protective sheaths covering the Schwann cells
What are the axon terminals?
The part of a nerve cell that connects to another cells dendrites to pass on information
What are the two types of neurons
Afferent
Efferent
What are efferent neurons?
Neurons carrying motor commands away from the CNS
What are the afferent neurons?
Neurons carrying sensory commands from the body to the CNS
Why do the afferent neurons send sensory commands to the brain?
For processing
Why do the efferent neurone carry motor commands away from the CNS?
To send the commands to muscles or glands to instruct the body to do an action
List the main function of each of these:
1.Afferent neurons
2.CNS
3.Efferent neurons
1.Sensory information towards the brain
2.Decision making
3.Reaction commands from the brain to muscles or glands
