45 students shown 7 films of different traffic accidents
Given questionnaire which asked “how fast when hit each other”
5 Groups
given words: Hit, smashed, collided, bumped, contacted
Smashed = higher speed (around 41mph)
Contacted = lowest speed (around 30 mph)
Form of questioning can effect witness’ answers

shown film of accident, asked about speed
After 1 week, asked series of questions: Did you see any broken glass
Smashed in questions = more likely to say yes
Hit = less likely

watched video of the same crime, different angles
saw elements that other didn’t
71% recalled aspects of event they didn’t see but from discussion
Witnesses go along with each other for social approval or believe they are right, others are wrong
Post-event discussion, Repeat interviewing
Possibility that comments from interviewer will become incorporated into their recollection of events
May use leading questions - esp when children involved

Misleading info about bugs bunny + ariel
ALL pp have been to disneyland
If given advertisement material with BB + A, more likely to report shaking hands with these characters than those who didn’t
