OCD Drug therapy Flashcards
(7 cards)
GABA
neurotransmitter, regulates excitement
form of natural anxiety reducer
Noradrenaline
Neurotransmitter, mainly in areas of brain
govern ANS
Drug therapy
Most common
Assumes chemical imbalance in brain
either increase/decrease neurotransmitters in brain
SSRIS - Antidepressants
Serotonin regulates aggression, eating, sleep, depression
Low levels = OCD
Increase serotonin levels for Depression + OCD
Prevent re-uptake process, increase amount in synapse = reduces anxiety
Tricyclics - Antidepressants
Similar to SSRIS
Block re-uptake of BOTH serotonin AND noradrenaline
Greater side affects
Benzodiazepines - Anti anxiety drugs
Slow activity of CNS by enhancing GABA
GABA locks onto receptors on neurons in brain
Opens channel (this increases chloride ions to neuron)
CI make it harder to be stimulated
Slows activity of neurons
(XANEX, VALIUM)
