The working memory model Flashcards
(6 cards)
The working memory model
Focuses on short-term memory
2 separate components - visual + verbal
function independently
visuospatial sketchpad + phonological loop
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
visual + spatial tasks
Visual cache/store (holds info based on colour + form)
visual notepad/ inner scribe (spatial + movement information)
Phonological loop
Sounds
especially repetition - “loop”
Split into: Phonological store (sounds stored briefly) + articulatory process (repeated words)
Central executive
Not a store - part of paying ATTENTION
pay attention , CE sends to either store
Allocating slave-systems to tasks
Episodic Buffer
General store
Buffer = temporary store for holding information
seen as “storage component” of CE
integrates visual-spatial and sound into episodes
records info in episodes, so it is time-sequenced
stores any information not visual or sound
capacity - 4 chunks
AO3
KF
brain damage -STM severely impaired
ST of forgetting auditory> ST of forgetting visual
separate components
Dual-task performance
difficulty doing two tasks (visual) than verbal + visual
compete for same component
case study
lack population validity
Dual-tasks relies highly on controlled lab conditions
lack of ecological valdity
