aim
to investigate if the amygdala plays a role in the experience of fear
who was studied and why
a woman called SM with a rare genetic condition that caused bilateral lesions in her amygdalae and prevents her from feeling fear.
prior studies showed that she has impairment in fear condition and recognition
had stayed in an abusive relationship for years and ended up being held at knifepoint once for her inability to avoid dangerous situations
method
researchers tried to induce fear in her by taking her to
- exotic pet store where she held a snake, was not scared but curious
-haunted house where she did not display signs of fear
- showed her scary movie clips
furthermore gathered data with self-report questionnaires and interviews
results
nothing made her afraid - lack of response to stimuli means that she cannot release cortisol to facilitate memories of fearful situations and learn to avoid dangerous situations
conclusion
amygdala might be a significant factor in the experience of fear
