Robbins et al. (ERQ w PP) Flashcards
(8 cards)
aim
to investigate the nature of working memory model stores in practice
participants
20 male chess players ranging in abilities
method
2 conditions of which both involved viewing an arrangement of chess pieces on a board and then recreating it to an empty one
- visual and spatial interference: had to tap a particular sequence in a keypad in lap while recreating
- verbal interference: repeating “the” while recreating
results
verbal: avg 16/25 (64%) correct
visual spatial: 4/25 (16%) correct
why
because verbal used visuospatial and phonological systems, each working independently = there is limited interference
visual spatial both tasks (tapping and recreating) use visuospatial system and its capacity is limited
conclusion
evidence that there are different slave systems that control different modalities of information as the results would not be observable if the WMM was all one system
