MRI
aim
to determine how different forms of neglect would affect brain growth
method
children under examination were categorized to 2 types of neglect
- global (had experienced sensory deprivation in 2 areas like touch/social interaction etc.)
- chaotic (history of physical, social or cognitive neglect)
brain growth was examined through MRI scans and measures of brain circumference
these measures compared with typical measures for children of the same age
results
MRI showed that global neglect had greatest difference in head circumference
these children had
- decreased brain growth
- greatest amount of brain abnormalities
- less volume in their cortices
conclusion
neglect as a child leads to having less sensory stimulation which can result in lesser brain growth and fewer neural pathways formed
