Fick's law Flashcards
(7 cards)
define and give examples of an exchange surface
an area that is adapted to make it easier for molecules to travel from one side to the other
for example: stomata, lungs, kidney, gills
why is excretion required?
because chemical reactions produce wast that is toxic and needs to be get rid off.
Give and explain 2 parts of the body where excretion happens?
- Kidneys - Filter waste products in blood to form urine. removes urea.
- Lungs- remove carbon dioxide formed from respiration.
state 4 substances that need to enter our body and why?
glucose and oxygen for respiration
dissolve food molecules and mineral ions to produce new subs for your body.
what is ficks law?
ROD directly propotional to conc x suface area/ thickness of membrane.
what is the formula involving SA and Vol and how do you get the 2 values?
SA=6a^2
Vol=a^3
SA/Vol
why is there a limit to how big a cell can get?
as cells get bigger the SA:V ratio gets smaller and a big ratio is need for an increase in rate of diffusion.
