A

Hypothyroidism

Adverse effects: Skin reactions, symptoms of hyperthyroidism, cardiac stimulation, CNS effects

Drug-drug: oral anticoagulants, digoxin, OTC meds (iron, calcium)

Take in morning 1-2 hours before other medications

Monitor labs 8 weeks after therapy starts

A

Antithyroid agent for hyperthyroidism

Adverse effects: Thyroid syppression

Drug-drug: Anticoagulants, digoxin

Preferred in 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy

Propylthiouracil (PTU)

A

Antithyroid agent for hyperthyroidism

Preferred in 1st trimester of pregnancy, Not used for pediatrics

Administer 3 times per day, monitor for hepatic involvement

Adverse effects: Rash, jaundice
