flexibility Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is flexibility
range of motion about a joint
why is flexibility important to sports performers
avoids over stretching
decreases injuries
improves performance
what is static flexibility
range of motion about a joint without reference to speed of movement
what is dynamic flexibility
range of motion about a joint with reference to speed of movement. good static flexibility is important for good dynamic flexibility
what is static active flexibility
unloved a voluntary contraction to move a joint bush past its point of resistance. surrounding/opposing muscles are used to hold a position
what is static passive flexibility
a partner or aid moves a joint past it’s point of resistance
factors effecting flexibility
-type of joint
-length and elasticity of surrounding connective tissue
-gender
-age
effect of type of joint on flexibility
ball and socket have great range of motion
the size and shape of articulating bones limit of aid flexibility
effect of length and elasticity of surrounding connective tissue on flexibility
the greater the length and elasticity the greater the ROM
greater length means a greater stretch before the stretch reflex mechanism kicks in giving it greater ROM
effects of gender on flexibility
females are more flexible
females have higher levels of oestrogen and relaxin which is a hormone that increases tissue elasticity
effects of age on flexibility
flexibility is greatest in childhood and decreases with age
this decline is largely due to a loss of elasticity in connective tissues
