strength training Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is static strength
force is applied against a resistance without any movement
-isometric
e.g on beam, floor gymnastics
what is dynamic strength
applying a force against a resistance with the involvement of movement.
-isotonic
e.g long, triple and high jump
what is maximum strength
involves one single contraction where maximal force is applied by a muscle
e.g deadlift
what is explosive strength
ability to produce a maximal contraction in one or multiple rapid muscular contractions
e.g long jump, triple jump, shot putt
what is strength endurance
ability to sustain repeated forceful contractions i’ve a period of time without onset of fatigue
e.g swimming
factors of strength
cross sectional area
fibre type
gender
age
effect of cross sectional area of strength
-bigger the cross sectional, the greater the strength
-muscle tissue exerts a force of 16-30N per cm2
what effect does fibre type have on strength
greater % of FG the greater the strength
-larger motor neurones and more fibres per neurone so larger motor units so generates more force
what effect does gender have on strength
males have more strength than females
-males have more testosterone sk more muscle tissue so greater strength
-no difference when comparing per cm3 of muscle tissue
what effect does age have on strength
strength peaks for:
-males 18-30 years
-females 16-25 years
