FLEXIBILITY Flashcards
fitness component (5 cards)
flexibility
definition
range of movement around a joint. interaction between the body’s skeletal and muscular systems to allow a full and unimpeded range of joint movement to muscle actions
types of flexibility
dynamic (moving) or static (stationary)
generally dynamic
factors affecting flexibility
ball and socket joints have a greater flexibility than hinge joints
warm-up routines increase flexibility as they increase the temperature of both the muscles and the structures within the joints
females are more flexible as they have lower levels of testosterone, which is associated with increased muscle mass which decreases flexibility. Increased levels of oestrogen improves flexibility of connective tissue
flexibility is high from childhood to mid 20’s, then decreased collagen levels will decrease flexibility after this age
if muscles at rest are shortened, flexibility is limited. too much sitting work shortens hamstrings
joint type, warm-up, sex, age, length of muscles at rest
tests for flexibility
trunck flexion
trunck rotation
groin flexibility
shoulder and wrist elevation
trunck and neck extention
ankle extension
shoulder rotation
training methods
specialised flexibility training
