MUSCULAR ENDURANCE Flashcards
fitness component (5 cards)
muscular endurance
ability of a muscle or group of muscles to sustain repeated contractions against resistance for an extended period of time
muscular endurance in sports
important in long distance and continuous events (swimming, rowing, running),
factors affecting muscular endurance
greater lactate tolerance - more metabolic by-products that can be tolerated, the more/longer high-intensity efforts can be made
males have greater muscular endurance due to greater aerobic power and muscular strength, meaning better endurance
greater percentage of slow-twitch fibres - slow-twitch fibres work aerobically, therefore the more there are, the greater the muscles ability to work aerobically and contract repeatedly over a longer period of time. greater resistance to fatigue
lactate tolerance, sex, fibre type
tests for muscular endurance
60s push up test
30s sit-up test
flexed arm hang test
training methods
anaerobic glycolysis system: resistance training with high repetitions and little recovery (work:rest ratio of 1:3)
intermediate interval training
aerobic system: use training to develop aerobic power
