needed in most sports where distance, heigh, or any quick generation of force is important

Q

factors affecting muscular power

same as factors affecting strength as power combines strength and speed

A

large cross-sectional area - larger the muscle, the greater the strength potential (relating to muscle mass)
fast-twitch fibres are capable of greater strength output than slow-twitch fibres
males have greater muscle mass, therefore greater absolute strength. relative to cross-sectional area, no difference in strength available to any gender.
slower muscle contraction, more force it creates
strength preaks in performers aged 20-30, then decreases with the body’s diminishing ability to process protein, decreasing muscle mass (regular exercise can slow this process)
warmed-up muscles have greater ability to create strength
optimal angle for joint around muscle for the creation of strength

area, fibre type, sex, speed of contraction, age, warm up, joint angle
