Fossils Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What are fossils
A
-the remains of organisms for thousands of years ago which are found in rocks
2
Q
What theory do fossils prove
A
Darwin’s theory of evolution
3
Q
How are fossils made
- B… are buried and last a l… time
- They are eventually replaced by m… as they d…, forming a r… like substance shaped like the original b…
- the surrounding s… turn into r…, but the f… stays d… inside the rock
- Fossils are formed when an o… is b… in a soft material like c…
- The clay h… around it as it d… leaving a c… of itself
- Things like f… can also be p… into these materials
- In a… and tar p… there is no o… or moisture so decay … can’t s…
- In g… it’s too c… for the decay microbes to work
- Peat b… are too a… for decay m…
A
- Bones are buried and last a long time
- They are eventually replaced by minerals as they decay, forming a rock like substance shaped like the original bone
- the surrounding sediments turn into rock, but the fossil stays distinct inside the rock
- Fossils are formed when an organism is buried in a soft material like clay
- The clay hardens around it as it decays leaving a cast of itself
- Things like footprints can also be pressed into these materials
- In amber and tar pits there is no oxygen or moisture so decay microbes can’t survive
- In glaciers it’s too cold for the decay microbes to work
- Peat bogs are too acidic for decay microbes

Q
Why do we not know that evolution is certain
-many early f… of life were soft b…, so fossil r… are incomplete
-f… formed m… of years ago have been d… by geological a… eg … plates colliding
A
-many early forms of life were soft bodied, so fossil record are incomplete
-fossils formed millions of years ago have been destroyed by geological activity eg tectonic plates colliding
