What is the mechanism of action of furosemide?

A

loop diuretic
- acts in the loop of henle
- inhibits the NKCC cotransporter
- reduced Na/K/Cl into epithelium (more in nephron) > H2O follows
.
- direct dilatation of capacitance veins > reduces preload

What are the adverse effects of furosemide?

A
  • dehydration
  • hypokalaemia (alkalosis) + hyponatremia
  • hypotension
  • gout
  • ototoxicity > tinnitus
