1

Ball valve

Shut-off valve

2

Gate valve

Shut-off valve

3

Butterfly valve

Shut-off valve but can also be used for throttling/regulating flow.

4

Where is a suction diffuser found and what does it do?

Found on the suction side of end-suction pumps.
They straighten the flow and avoid the need for a straight pipe section into the pump. They also have integral strainers.

5

Where should an air separator be installed?

At highest temperature and the lowest pressure points in the system. Where this is not possible, the best location is at the point of highest temperature.

6

What does an expansion tank do?

Absorbs excess water pressure caused by thermal expansion

7

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - SCREWED

All pressures. smaller pipe sizes

8

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - WELDED

Available for steel pipe. Used for all fitting connections but for valves, mainly high temp and high pressure services.

9

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - BRAZED

Used on brass

10

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - SOLDERED

Used on copper

11

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - FLARED

Used on metal and plastic tubing

12

End connection for valves and Fittings - Common application - FLANGED

Used on larger sized pipe

13

What does a check valve do?

Prevents flow in reverse direction

14

What does a balancing valve do?

Reduces flow

15

What does an isolation valve do?

Shut-off valves
