2
Q

deciduous trees

A

Deciduous trees, on the other hand, shed their broad, flat leaves annually, typically in the fall, and reproduce using flowers that develop into fruits or nuts.

Q

coniferous tree

A

Coniferous trees are defined by their needle-like or scale-like leaves that remain attached year-round, and they produce cones to reproduce.

Q

Anticline

A

an arch of rock arranged in layers that bend downward in opposite directions from the top compare syncline. Basically the opposite of a syncline

19
Q

Ground water flow

A

The flow of water into seas when it is in the zone of saturation

20
Q

Through water flow

A

The flow of water into the sea when it is in the water table

21
Q

Percelation

A

When water gradually moves through porous rock

22
Q

Infiltration

A

When the water seeps into the ground

23
Q

Dip slope

A

The part of land that is higher than the rest though going down away from the middle.

24
Q

Scarp slope

A

The slope connecting the dip slope and the lower piece of land

25
Vale
A vale is a long depression in the land, usually between two hills and containing a river
26
Temperate biome
Moderate (goldilock biome) and is very consistent
27
Savanha
Arid and dry with some vegetation though only stuff like grass
28
Tundra
Very cold and icy with only a few grass patches
29
Taiga / boreal forest
cold, long winters and short, cool summers with low rainfall
30
Things that affect our temp
Latitude, altitude, continentality, gulf stream
31
How does latitude affect temp?
The higher latitude, the more the atmosphere is spread thin as well as the more the sun's rays are spread out
32
How does altitude affect temp?
every 100 metres up = -1 degrees celsius
33
How does continentality affect temp?
Water holds in heat creating a better goldilock biome, if there is no water near, there will be more extremes.
34
How does the gulf stream affect our temp?
It gives us warm air most of the time.
35
Convectional rainfall
The sun heats up the ground, the ground heats up the air causing hot air to rise with water molecules to rise, the air rises to high in the atmosphere creating big clouds. This happens in tropical areas.
36
Frontal rainfall
The cold front pushes the warm front up causing moist air to quickly rise and water vapour to condense. This happens in places like here
37
Orographic(relief) rainfall
Warm moist air follows the route of the mountain, it is forced up quickly with the water in it, the water molecules condense and fall on the mountain, dry air is left coming out. This happens near the west of England
38
Hurricane Sandy key facts
60 billion dollars to US but 65 billion to all countries affected About 250 deaths Power cuts on islands Outbreaks in Haiti Subways flooded 12 feet storm surge Was briefly a category 2 hurricane
39
Coniferous tree adaptations
Branches curved downward to allow snow to fall off Spikey leaves to prevent water loss Protective seed balls to protect the seed thick bark to insulate Wide shallow roots
40
Depression
An area of low air pressure
41
Anticyclone
An area of high air pressure
42
Stage 1 of a depression
Warm front not here yet, quite cold, starts to decrease in air pressure, clouds begin to thicken, no rainfall
43
Stage 2 of a depression
Warm front nearing, temperatures begin to rise, air pressure continues to decrease, low thick nimbostratus clouds and there begins to have steady rainfall
44
Stage 3 of a depression
Warm front over us. mild temperatures, pressure begins to stay steady, clouds begin to thin and break up, there is a drizzle but no heavy rainfall
45
Stage 4 of a depression
Cold front over us now, temperatures suddenly drop, pressure begins to rise, thick cumulonimbus clouds with heavy rain and a chance of thunder or hail
46
Stage 5 of a depression
Cold front is basically over us apart from in the sky, temperatures stay cold, pressure continues to rise, thin and low cumulus clouds with some small showers
