The Old Testament

A

It begins with God’s Creation of the universe and humanity. It was written before the birth/incarnation of Jesus. The first 5 books are also called the Torah, and are called the 5 books of God’s law. It describes the Jewish people before Jesus

A

It begins with the 4 Gospels, then the book of acts of the apostles and contains several letters between early Christian leaders. It ends with the book of revelation.

The beginning of the New Testament. Descriptions of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and ascension to God can be found here. Matthew and John of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were disciples of Jesus.

The Ten Commandments

A

Found in the Old Testament
You shall have no other gods before Me. This commandment emphasizes the belief in one God.
You shall not make unto thee any graven image.
You shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor thy father and thy mother.
You shall not murder. .
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
You shall not covet.

The Father- Trinity

A

God the Father shows Christians that in the same way a parent might create and nurture a life, God cares about his Creation and wants to protect it. God crafted a universe he loves, and he will provide for his Creation.

A

God the Son helps Christians to understand how God makes his love known in the world. Jesus spread teachings of
compassion and healed people who were sick. The life of Jesus, as described in the Gospels, also demonstrates that sacrifice and suffering are important parts of the human experience.

Jesus’ trial

A

Jesus was put on trial by the Sanhedrin. They considered Jesus’ claims to be the son of God blasphemy and found him guilty of this charge. Pontius Pilate would give the crowd a chance to free him but they picked to free Barabbas instead.

Jesus’ crucifixion

A

Jesus was crucified on a Friday. He was crucified along with 2 robbers with one asking to be remembered and who would be forgiven. Before he died he would ask the father “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”.

Jesus’ resurrection

A

His body was put in a tomb guarded by a rock after his death. Early on Sunday morning, the rock was found moved and his tomb empty whilst some of his female followers were going to anoint him with spices.

The Buddha was a man called Siddhartha Gautama, who is said to have lived nearly 2,500 years ago in India.

What is the Buddhist religious symbol?
The dharmachakra, also known as wheel of dharma, is widely used as the symbol of Buddhism. It shows a wheel with eight spokes, representing the Noble Eightfold Path and the teachings of the Buddha.

Theravada
Spread by King Ashoka who lived in India 100 years after the Buddha died. It states that each person has to find their own enlightenment (the truth about the meaning of life that Buddha gained) through meditation and help from wise monks. Their special books are written in Pali and they will remember the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha during the festival of Wesak.

Mahayana
Their special books are written in another ancient language of India called Sanskrit and during the festival of Wesak they only celebrate the birth of the Buddha. Mahayana Buddhists believe there are many different ways to gain enlightenment and that the Bodhisattvas will help them. A Bodhisattva is someone who can gain enlightenment but decides to stop this from fully happening in order to help others gain enlightenment as well.

Meditation-Buddhism
There are many different forms and aims of meditation. The two major traditions are called samatha and vipassana Meditation as a whole is important in all branches of Buddhism

The 5 moral precepts
Refrain from taking life, refrain from taking what is not given, refrain from sexual misconduct, refrain from wrong speech, refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind.

How many people are Hindus?
Hinduism has over 1 billion followers worldwide, with about 95% of Hindus living in India. At the time of the 2011 census, there were over 800,000 Hindus living in the UK.

What is the Hindu religious symbol?
The Om symbol (sometimes written as Aum) and it is the Hindu word or sound for God. Hindus will say this at the beginning and end of all prayers

What are Hindu shrines called?
A Hindu place of worship is called a mandir, but the majority of Hindus have a shrine at home where they perform personal and family worship. Worship in Hinduism is called puja.

The Trimurti
Hindus believe that Brahman is beyond their understanding, so the different gods and goddesses help them to understand various aspects of Brahman. Three of the Hindu gods are known as the Trimurti.

Brahma
Brahma is the first of the Trimurti and is the creator of the universe. He has four heads and four arms, and is often shown holding sacred texts, a string of beads called a mala, a lotus flower, and a water pot known as a kamandalu.

Vishnu
Vishnu is the preserver of the universe. He has four arms which hold: a conch shell, a discus, a lotus flower and a mace. He is sometimes shown sitting or standing on a five headed snake.

Shiva
Shiva is the destroyer of evil. He has pale white skin with a blue throat, and a third eye on his forehead. Shiva carries a trident, and is often shown seated on a tiger skin.

What are the Hindu Holy books?
The Vedas - a collection of hymns praising the Vedic gods. Veda means 'knowledge'. The Ramayana - long epic poems about Rama and Sita. The Mahabharata - which includes the Bhagavad Gita. The Puranas - a collection of stories about the different incarnations and the lives of saints.

Some Hindus use images to assist puja. Murti are statues of deities, which have been consecrated and must be treated with respect.

Features of Puja
Water, fruit, flowers and incense may be offered to the murti.A bell is rung to 'waken' the deities and arti performed.Personal or communal prarthana may be chanted.

Types of Yoga in Hinduism
Jnana yoga - studies of scripture, to gain deeper knowledge. Bhakti yoga - worship and rituals, seen as the path of spiritual devotion. Raja yoga - meditating to gain a greater sense of reality and eventually enlightenment. Karma yoga - an attempt to serve the divine in everything you do – worship through actions.

What is the name of the cycle of death and rebirth according to Buddhists?
Buddhists believe in reincarnation based on Karma with the cycle being Samsara.
