Describe the types of acid suppresion drugs - antacids
Antacids (e.g. Maalox)
— Contain magnesium or aluminium
— Neutralise gastric acid
— Taken when symptoms occur
Describe alginates
Alginates (e.g. Gaviscon)
— Form a viscous gel that floats on stomach contents and reduces reflux
Describe H2 blockers
H2-receptor antagonists (e.g. Ranitidine)
— Block histamine receptor thereby reducing acid secretion
— Indicated in GORD/Peptic ulcer disease
— Given orally or intravenously
— Gl side effects
What are the types of laxative?
Bulk (isphagula) Osmotic (lactulose) Stimulant (senna) Softeners (archis oil) Work by increasing bulk or drawing fluid into gut
