Habituation vs inhibitory learning Flashcards

1
Q

Habituation hypothesis

A

Extinction through habituation, causing desentization. Doesn’t involve new learning, and is vulnerable for spontaneous recovery, reacquisition in different contexts (renewal) reinstatement (unsignaled US) and re-acquisition

Q

Inhibitory learning model

A

Original CS-US association learns is not erased, but secondary inhibitory learning about this assoc. develops. (no longer predicts US). Not focused on fear reduction during exposure, but expectancy violation

Q

Meanings of CS after extinction

A

CS-US; original meaning

Q

Reason for fear

A

Anxious people have deficits in mechanisms central for extinction learning. Also contribute to development of excessive fear. The fear is a mismatch between expectancy and outcome. The more this expectancy can be violated, the greater inhibitory learning

Q

Expectancy violation

A

Needs to be very specific in order to word. As learning is focused on whether the expected negative outcome occured. Learning is consolidated by asking to judge what they learned regarding non-occurrence. Mental rehearsal is important for memory reconsolidation

Q

Deepened extinction

A

Multiple fear CSs are extinguished seperately and than combined. Eg combining internal and external CS that predict the same US
