Q

Factors which effect emp of tps, wpns, eqpt
Apart from normal hazards of mtnous trn, special factors which effect emp of tps, wpns, eqpt & their corresponding eff on tactics & adm are:

A

(a) High alt causing rarified atmosphere, lack of oxygen & increased solar radiations.
(b) Extreme climate causing very low temperatures, perpetual snow, high winds & blizzards synonymous of near arctic condition.
(c) Isolation caused due to general lack of well-developed surface communications, closure of passes on account of snow, and erratic air supply and general lack of amenities.

Q

Environmental Hazard
The important environmental conditions which tps at high altitude face are:

A

(a) Lowered atmospheric pressure resulting in diminishing supplies of oxygen in the inhaled air (hypoxia).
(b) Low temperatures & humidity.
(c) Increased intensity of solar radiations.
(d) Isolation and monotonous surroundings.

Q

Acclimatization
It is imp that when tps are posted at alt above 2,440 m (8,000 feet), they are systematically acclimatized. Normally, it takes approx 3 weeks for sufficient acclimatization, before tps can be effectively deployed in an active role at high altitudes.
It is ideal to acclimatize the tps in three stages, as given under: -

A

(a) 2,745 metres (9,000 feet approximately).
(b) 3,355 metres (11,000 feet approximately).
(c) 4,270 metres (14,000 feet approximately).
Acclimatization at each altitude has been for a period of not less than eight days.
