Hills have been classified as per their characteristics. [SERP] – 4

(b) Extended hills
(c) Ridge.
(d) Pass.

(b) Special type of eqpt rqr to mvre tps.
(c) More time rqr to mvre tps.
Characteristics of Extended Hills [DAE] - 3
(a) Deployability of tps.
(b) Aval of appchs from all dirs.
(c) Easy mvre.
Characteristics of Ridges [LLM] - 3
(a) Less aval of appchs.
(b) Less deployability.
(c) Manoeuvrability of tps from flks is difficult & time consuming.
Tactics in Mtn
Fol general aspects pertaining to tactics stand out: [TD POUCH]
(a) Ops are mainly restd to inf supported by arty.
(e) Devp of comn & their maint places severe strain on engr resources.
(b) Paucity of rds & adm difficulties limit the size of the force which can be employed.
(c) Use of offn air sp is restd due to lack of obsn & inability of a/c to mvre in narrow valleys. However, tpt sp esp of hepts is invaluable.
(d) Constr of def takes longer & rqrs emp of mechanical drills & explosives.
Plg & Deployment [PD FAT] - 5
(a) Plg has to be meticulous. Due to ltd no. of routes & restd areas aval, deployment is difficult. Initial errors cannot be corrected & it is difficult to execute last minute changes in a plan.
(b) Due to restd no. of routes, efficient tfc con is nec.
(c) Tasks allotted to tps should be ltd & kept within their caps.
(d) Fire sp, particularly CAS, is restd & it may not be able to follow time schedule laid down.
(e) AT & porters should be utilized for move over difficult trn to maintain mob.
