Immune Response - Adaptive and Passive Immunity Flashcards
What does it mean if you are immune to a pathogen?
Adaptive immunity ultimately results in the production of memory B cells and antibodies
What is natural adaptive immunity?
Antibodies develop in response to an infections
What is artificial adaptive immunity?
Antibodies develop in response to a vaccination
What happens when the T cells is activated?
Rapidly divides by mitosis to produce many T lymphocytes
What is an antibody?
A protein made in response to a specific antigen, made by plasma sites
What is special about the antigen binding sites?
Specific to the antigen due to their complementary shape
Why are antibodies produced much more quickly during a secondary response?
Has memory cells, next exposure to the same antigen gives more antibodies
What is a secondary response?
When a persons is exposed to the same antigen for a second time, more antibodies are produced and more quickly
If a person is exposed to the real pathogen after being vaccinated why wont they get the disease?
Memory cells close quickly, able to present in greater numbers and so produce more antibodies more quickly
What is passive immunity?
A person receives antibodies to a disease rather than producing their own through the immune response
What is natural passive immunity?
Antibodies in breast milk, through placenta gives immunity
What is artificial passive immunity?
Injection of antibodies that gives immunity
