Cellular Injury and Reponse Flashcards
(31 cards)
What ways can cells get damaged in the body?
Bruising
Infection
Hypoxia
Anoxia
Chemical exposures
Pressure sores
Drugs
What is the role of the sodium potassium pump?
Helps to maintain the osmotic potential of the cell
If it stops functioning normally cellular swelling can occur
Cells may not able able to produce enough ATP, which organelle is damaged?
Mitochondria
Cells may not be able to produce enough ATP, it could be due to not having enough of which respiratory substrate?
Oxygen and glucose
What is hyperplasia?
An increase in number of cells
Cells undergo mitosis more quickly and increasing the number f cels
What can abnormal hyperplasia lead to?
The development og tumours via unregulated mitosis
What is hypertrophy?
An enlargement of cells in response to additional demand
Where does hypertrophy normally occur?
Muscle
What is atrophy?
Decrease in either cells size or number
When does atrophy happen?
When a limb has been immobilised in plaster
What is metaplasia?
A change from one differentiated cell type to another - meta change
What is metaplasia seen as?
The precursor to cancer in some tissues
What is inflammation?
A response to injury or infection
What are side effects of inflammation?
Swelling
Pain
Tenderness
Heat
Redness
What is ischemia?
Insufficient blood flow resulting in a lack of oxygenated tissues
What is hypoxia?
Not enough oxygen is supplied to the cells in tissues
What are symptoms of hypoxia?
Low blood volume
Poor blood flow
Reduced oxygen content of inspired air
Lung disease
What is anoxia?
Complete lack of oxygen is supplied to the cells in the tissues
What are symptoms of anoxia?
More severe effects that hypoxia
What are causes of anoxia and hypoxia?
Blood clot in artery - myocardial infarction
Narrowing of the artery that supplies blood - vascular disease
What are health consequences of ischemia?
Repeated cell injury, can lead to atrophy and eventually necrosis of cells in that area
What can a nutriential imbalance cause?
Affects the composition of the plasma membrane
What can physical trauma cause?
Can break the cell membrane
What can extremes of temps cause?
Proteins in the cell to denature
