Immunity Flashcards
(6 cards)
What do lymphocytes do with pathogens
When lymphocytes meet a foreign antigen they produce antibodies
These lock on to pathogens and mark them for destruction by other WBC
The antibodies produced are specific to that type of antigen
Antibodies are produced rapidly and flow round the body, targeting the pathogens
What does your immune system use to deal with pathogens
With phagocytes and lymphocytes
What do phagocytes do
Phagocytes detect things that are foreign to the body and ENGULF and DIGEST them
Phagocytes are non-specific, what does this mean?
It means they attack whatever is foreign to the body, whatever isn’t supposed to be there.
How does your system prevent you falling ill to past diseases
Some lymphocytes stay in the blood after the original infection has been fought off.
They can reproduce very fast if the same antigen enters the body a second time.
What happens in vaccinations
Dead or inactive pathogens are injected into the body. These carry antigens-but they are harmless.
They still trigger an immune system response.
The lymphocytes produce antibodies to attack them. Some lymphocytes will remain as memory cells, so that if the same pathogen enters the body again, they can reproduce quickly and attack it.
