Chris came here after being with Jan and Bob in salton city. He camped around the oh-my-God hot springs. This is where he met Ron Franz
Baja, California/Mexico
Chris bought a canoe and paddled down the Colorado river in hopes of going to the Gulf of California. Once in Mexico he kept running into dead ends among these canals, and finally sought the assistance of some locals. The canal they brought him too, turned out to be the wrong one, and actually led him into a dead-end marsh area. Finally, he was taken directly to the the Bay of California. Frustrated he abandons the canoe and heads north.
Billie McCandless
Chris McCandless’ mother; actual name is Wilhelmina
Bullhead City, Arizona
Chris suprising took a strong liking to this town; he stayed here for over 2 months which was the longest he stayed at any one place after leaving Atlanta and before reaching Alaska. Chris worked at a McDonalds.
Carine McCandless
Chris McCandless’ younger sister
Chris and her were extremely close and he constantly confided in her and also sent her a letter saying how stupid their parents were
Carthage, South Dakota
Chris worked for Westerberg’s grain elevator here. Chris liked this town and its community.
Chris’ belt
Franz, an accomplished leather worker, taught Chris the secrets of his craft. Chris’s first project was this and he created an artful pictorial record of his adventures on it.
Colorado River
Chris uses this river to enter Mexico. He hopes to reach the gulf of California and encounters many hardships and dead ends and eventually abandons his canoe to return north.
Devil’s Thumb
Krakauer(the author) climbed this in Alaska with difficulty and several attempts. He believed it would change his life and fix his problems but in reality nothing changed.

Where chris was born. He returned in 1986 and discovered family secrets. (his dad was having an affair with his first wife after leaving her)

In Atlanta, chris graduated from here in 1990 with honors.He was a columnist and editor of their student newspaper. He majored in anthropology and history

20 year old in the early 1900s; similar to McCandless; disappeared in Utah, where he carved “NEMO 1934”

Fairbanks City Transit System #142
It is the”magic bus” Chris found and used for shelter in Alaska. Chris’s body was found in it. It was originally used to house yultan construction workers in the 1960’s and was left halfway out the trail to serve as backcountry shelter for hunters and trappers.

Stampede Trail
The trail Chris follows in Alaska, it was burned in the 1930’s and they tried to fix it but they gave up, bus 142 was there for the workers to take breaks, and for a shelter for hunters and trappers and it remains.
Teklanika River
Referred to as the Rubicon (a point of no return) for Christopher McCandless. It has fluctuating depths and increases in volume in the summer due to glacier discharge. Was able to cross it initially but as temperatures warmed, the river became to strong and deep to cross making it unable to pass by foot.
