Anza Borrego/Desert Hot Springs
hippie hangout where weird ppl come to relax by the pools. He meets Franz the old depressed guy there. It is eventually shut down by the gov for toxic microbes but the gov secretly wanted to get rid of it and its people.
Baja, California/Mexico
Meets ppl who teach him the land. He later canoes throughout Baja Mexico and doesn’t write as many entrees he really enjoys his time. He later gets lost in the swamps looking for the ocean where he meets Mexican duck hunters who take him to the ocean. On the ocean he hits a storm and ditches the canoe in search for money in the north.
Billie McCandless
Mother who is worried about her son’s disappearance. She works in her husband’s firm as a business partner. She still doesn’t understand her son’s risky trip and still grieves.
Bullhead City, Arizona
bullhead is a city full of Casinos, fast food joints, and is famous for the Mohave highway. Chris likes this city and stayed here for a significant amount of time during his odyssey. Before continuing to Alaska he needed money, so he got a job at McDonald’s. He squatted in a trailer on Charlie’s property.
Carine McCandless
Chris’s younger sister who he is close to
Carthage, South Dakota
Sleepy town of 274, full of farmers and wheat collectors. Chris often visits here throughout his journey to work and stay. Chris often says it’s the hometown of Alex Supertramp. Westerberg lives here. A lot of nomads come here to work.
Chris’s belt
Franz taught Chris his leatherwork and they constructed a belt with ALEX, CJM, and a skull n crossbones. It is symbolic of their friendship

Everett is suspected to have died in the river

Famous mountain with its north wall never climbed. The author climbed it
Denali
city in Alaska, and where Chris spent 112 days.
El Segundo, California
Where Chris spent the first 6 years of his life and where his dad came to cheat on Billie with his previous wife, giving life to another kid while already married.
Emory University
Chris’s preppy college, where he did very well academically. He wrote for “the Emory Wheel” ( Emory’s Newspaper) where many people disagreed with his Political standpoint.
Everett Reuss
Carved his name into Davis Gulch which inspired Chris to inscribe Alex Supertramp into it. Then he disappeared into the dessert where he is assumed to be dead. He is an inspiration for Chris. He started his first expedition in high school and later his second after dropping out of UCLA. Ruess would spend the remainder of his life on the move, living out of a backpack and sleeping on dirt going hungry for days. He had a passion for the natural world. McCandles’s and Ruess are said to be similar in nature. Ruess also has an alias by the name of LAN Rameau. On his travels he left behind NEMO graffiti.
His brother thinks he was murdered, ken sleight thinks he drowned.
Fairbanks City Transit System #142
A bus that is broken beyond repair in Denali park and has sheltered many people from time to time. It is also Chris’s final resting place where he is shelters himself from the elements and dies of his injuries.
Jan Burres and Bob
rubber tramps who sell knick knacks who see Chris on the road near Oregon Border and take them with him to teach him and camp with him. A couple who have a fondness for Chris because he reminds them of her son. They are a couple who received postcards from Chris periodically and meet up with him in Bullhead and they travel to the slabs where Alex sells books for them.
Jim Gallien
An accomplished woodsman, hunter, and electrician who meets the hit hiking Chris by taking him to Denali. Gallien is worried that Chris won’t survive on the little gear he has brought with him, so he discourages him with stories of bears and little game. Chris eager to continue his odyssey doesn’t listen to the warnings. Gallien as a last effort supplies him with new boots and food. They take a picture and Chris leaves. He later tips the Alaska troopers of Alex’s real identity.

Ronald Franz
Religious, Alcoholic vet who Chris meets at the hot springs. He lost his wife and child and adopts kids from Okinawa. Him and Chris bonded with a father son kind of relationship. They traveled and stayed together for quite some time. After Chris left he traveled the country like Chris told him to do. When he died he became an Atheist and still grieves.
Rubber tramps
Vagabonds who have personal transportation.
Sam McCandless
Chris’s older half brother. He also was the first to tell his parents of Chris’s death.
