Lecture 13 (midterm 2) Flashcards
(23 cards)
Autonomous Regulation
reflect interests/ values
-depending on what you value, thats what will affect your motivation and will relate to how much you have a choice in general
Self Determination
its completely your choice to do something
Amotivation
lack of motivation
-“Ill do it because I have nothing better to do”
Intrinsic Motivation
most self determined
-“I love the feel of the blades on the ice when im skating along the oval”
-I want to do it, I feel good, I like doing it
Extrinsic Motivation: 4 Categories
External, Introjected, Identified, Integrated Regulations
External Regulation
least self determined
-:My parents are making me play soccer”
-someone making/ telling you to do it
Introjected Regulation
more self determined
-internal pressure to avoid negative emotions
-“if you dont do this, youll let someone down”
-feeling like you have to do it to avoid negative emotion
Identified Regulation
linked more to valued goals -autonomy (choice)
-“playing soccer will make me look cool”
-doing the things you want because they align with the things you value
Integrated Regulation
consistent with personal identity
-you do something because you think it is a part of who you are
“Playing soccer is who I am”
-the activity, how it makes you feel, who you want to be, what you value, etc
Controlled Motivation
External and Introjected
“I should do it”
Autonomous Motivation
Identified, integrated, intrinsic
“I want to do it”
When kids scored high on autonomous motivation/ regulation,
increased persistence and worked harder
-decreased dropout rates
=increased intention to return -come back after the season is finished
Male scholarship athletes reported what kind of regulation
Increased external regulation compared to females
(doing it for some other reason, not because you love it)
Athletes who were on a team but didnt have a scholarship showed:
Increased external regulation when offered a scholarship, decreasing the intrinsic motivation
Athletes who were on scholarship but were told it =was being revoked showed:
Decreased intrinsic motivation, by a LOT
-completely lost their love for the sport since they wouldnt get any more money to play
Controlling (autocratic) coaches caused what in teams
lots of dropout from athletes
People who were more driven by autonomous motivation showed what with PA?
-more MVPA/ week
-people who see activity as a reward, investment, not as a loss of time
-running as an autonomous decision showed they would continue with age
When autonomy was high during rehab,
individuals had an increased return to their sports
-no pressure from the coach, needing money, etc
If controlling was high during rehab,
individuals felt pressure to get back onto the field faster (money, coaches, etc) and caused the rehab to be slower
When someone had an autonomous choice with Self Efficacy,
They had more confidence in their motivation
Stages of Change were affected by autonomous regulation by:
Autonomous motivation caused them to maintain exercise
-they were way higher in score compared to others in the preparation/ action stage
Coping
a basic need satisfaction to be able to stress more
3 Basic Needs
Autonomy (your choice)
Competency (being aware of yourself)
Relatedness (feel connected to others)
