Cohesion
a dynamic process for a group to stick together and remain united in pursuit of its instrumental objectives or because of satisfaction of member affective needs
Cohesion is the what of a team
the glue
-holds us together
-why we get with people and dont want to leave
Four Characteristics of Cohesion
Its dynamic, Factors that hold groups together vary and are numerous, Instrumental, and Affective Reasons
Four Characteristics of Cohesion: Its Dynamic
-cohesion is always changing
-a group early on is very different than it would be years later
-it is an evoling process
Four Characteristics of Cohesion: factors that hold groups together are varied/ numerous
-what are the factors that keep a group together?
-there are many (like a lot)
Four Characteristics of Cohesion: Instrumental
-all groups form for a reason
-can come together, but coming with a purpose is the start of cohesion
Four Characteristics of Cohesion: Affective Reasons
-strong emotional ties among members
-I stay in this group because it makes me feel good
Multidimensional Cohesion
there are many reasons why you stick in/ with this group
Group Cohesion
“I” -need to consider there are personal reasons you want to be in this group
“I like this…”
ATG
Attraction to Group
Personal Reason (TASK): like the fact of what the team is doing
Social Reason: I like the team because we part hard -make me feel good/ laugh
GI
Group Integration
“WE”: after a couple years with the group, it is now WE do this well
Group Integration
Task: we work hard when we lose a good player
Social: we all do this because of this…
Environmental factors related to cohesion
-group size
-the smaller size of a PA class= higher task and social cohesion
-higher physical proximity= higher amount of cohesion
Personal Adherence
if you were personally attracted to what the group was doing, then lots of adherence happened
Structured Exercise and Adherence
groups caused:
- more adherence (personal attraction)
-attendance increased
-less dropout
-lower lateness rate
Unstructured Exercise Groups and Adherence
ATG was not linked to adherence anymore
-GI Tasks (group as a collective) -people tended to stay in the groups= High GI Tasks
High GI social caused:
negative relationship because even though people liked it, they didnt show up as much
University classes with regular attendees showed:
-had more task cohesion (after 3 weeks) drop outs
-if you scored high on ATG task, you’d still be there
-if you didn’t think the group was cohesive, you wouldn’t show up as much
Private fitness clubs showed:
-more social cohesion
When task cohesion (tied to it) was high:
It increased Intention to return
-ITR to youth soccer team next season was correlated to how much you like it
Hockey players whop played the season after
-has higher task cohesion
Intra-team communication caused
-higher task cohesion
-higher appreciation
-higher social cohesion
-lower negative conflict conflict
Task Cohesion was high when
-those who exchange with more teammates
-teams that exchange more info to each other
-not just what you say, but how often you say it
If a leader gave a lot of recognition to players often;
-the players reported higher levels of ATG- task
-because it is going personally to them, you will feel it more
