Lecture 14 (midterm 2) Flashcards
(22 cards)
Arousal
physiological/ psychological activation of ANS
-heart rate up, sweating, breathing rate increases
-deep sleep to full/ peak activation
-neither pleasant or unpleasant
-can be positive or negative events
Negative Emotions with Anxiety: Associated with Appraisal
-evaluation
-if you think your going to be evaluated, you’ll feel anxiety
Negative Emotions with Anxiety: Universal
-its everywhere in the world, basically everybody feels it
Negative Emotions with Anxiety: Distinct Physiology
-when you get anxious, things start happening (sweating, heart rate up, increased breathing, muscle tightness)
Negative Emotions with Anxiety: Unique set of Action Tendencies
when we get anxious,. we have “Tells” (like in poker) -get angry, mock, eat, etc
-also twitch, knee shake, etc
Cognitive Anxiety
Concerns/ worries that reduce ability to focus/ concentrate
-when you start thinking about things, it makes you worry about those things
-affects your abilities
Somatic Anxiety
Physiological effects resulting from autonomic arousal
-perceived by the individual
-results from activating the ANS
-realize your heart is racing and going “Oh, I’m anxious”
State Anxiety: A-State
Worries/ apprehension at any given moment
-situation specific
-anxiety now vs next week is different -changes as the situation changes
-when people were on the inside lane of a BMX race, they were more anxious
Trait Anxiety
Personality- A Trait
-predisposes to perceive situations as physically or psychologically threatening
-less= personality
=individual differences -some people are generally calm/ less anxious compared to others
Social Anxiety
Social situations when evaluation is present
-when your public speaking if people “grading” your presentation, you get more anxious
Social Physique Anxiety
Due to others evaluation of physique in social settings
-if physique is on display and people are judging it, it makes you anxious
-more exercise= less conscious about it
-but while exercising there is social physique anxiety at the gym
Competitive Trait Anxiety
Tendency to become anxious/ worried about failure in competition
-asses by SCAT
-high competitive or sport situation -competitive trait
-not sport related/ not competitive =not competitive trait
How to see Anxiety
Intensity of the symptoms
Frequency of Cognitive Intrusions- amount of time thinking and feeling about the competition
Directional Interpretation of Symptoms -facilitative (positive) or deblitative (negative)
Facilitative Direction
POSITIVE
Aware of heart rate= “Lets go, I’m ready, Bring it”
Debilitative Direction
NEGATIVE
Aware of heart rate= “shoot I’m nervous”
5 Personal Sources of State Anxiety: Amount of Experience/ Skill level related to outcome
-there are few differences in the anxiety levels
-HOWEVER, there are differences in directional nature (how we interpret the anxiety)
More skilled = facilitative (helpful)
Less skilled= debilitative (harmful)
5 Personal Sources of State Anxiety: Gender
Few male/ female differences
-HOWEVER. Females had increased social physique anxiety with exercise
5 Personal Sources of State Anxiety: Trait Anxiety
-traits influence state anxiety
-the more anxiety you have/ show, the more you’ll exhibit in situations
5 personal Sources of State Anxiety: Self Confidence and Self Presentational Beliefs
Positive beliefs decrease state anxiety
5 Personal Sources of State Anxiety: Self Regulation Strategies
-good and bad
-ill work on this to get better
Coping skills- imagery, self talk, decreases
Self Handicapping- increased excuses for failure -increase anxiety
